Sodium butyrate (butyric acid) is the basic energy material for the gastrointestinal epithelium. The use of microcapsule technology, in contrast to standard forms of butyric acid, prevents the complete release of butyric acid in the upper gastrointestinal tract and allows it to be delivered to the small and large intestines.
